There are ideas on the table!
You're sitting in your local cafe, checking Twitter and killing time. You come across an interesting news article and wish you had someone to discuss it with, but none of your friends are free right now.
Meanwhile, the guy at the next table is mulling over a startup idea. He really wants to bounce his ideas off someone, but he doesn't want to bother anybody.
On the second floor, a young student is having a spiritual awakening. She's just started listening to Americana music and she. is. OBSESSED. She wants to listen to more, but she has no idea where to start. Somebody in this cafe would surely be able to suggest 10 good Americana albums off the top of their head. Too bad you can't just ask something like that to a stranger...
Or can you? Ideas on the Table is a digital and analog system that lets you ask strangers in a cafe, "Is it cool if I ask you about Americana music?"
Using either the cafe's own loyalty app or a color-coded drink sleeve, you can flag yourself to everyone in the cafe as open and willing to talk about a certain topic. Other patrons who are interested in the same topic can approach you and hopefully strike up an interesting conversation!
Through the app, you can even specify an idea or question that's on your mind. Your idea will stay on the virtual "idea table" for three hours or until you leave.
By providing a familiar, trusted environment (your local cafe), a curiosity-inducing trigger (colorful drink sleeves) and a platform to overcome the initial barrier, Ideas on the Table helps bring strangers together to promote idea exchange between people who would otherwise never interact.
We made a clickable prototype of our app design using Invision and example screen captures from Starbucks' app.
